      Ashland High School proudly presents Bright Star, a new American musical, featuring music by Edie Brickell and Steve Martin, yes, the famous comedian. Lyrics are by Brickell, and book by Martin, based on an original story by Martin and Brickell. Directed by Betsy Bishop, Bright Star will run November 11—13 and  November 18-20 @ 7:30 p.m. with two Sunday matinees, November 14 and 21 at 2 p.m. at the Ashland HS Mountain Avenue Theatre. Tickets are currently available ONLY online. Due to covid, only 160 tickets sold at https://ashlandhs.booktix.com  can be purchased since we can only sell that number for a live show. 

      From award-winning screenwriter and playwright Steve Martin (Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Roxanne) and chart-topping singer-songwriter Edie Brickell comes a world premiere American musical inspired by their Grammy Award-winning collaboration “Love Has Come For You.” 

       Bright Star features 25 new songs and tells a beguiling tale that unfolds in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina between 1923 and 1945. Billy Cane, a young soldier just home from World War II, meets Alice Murphy, the brilliant editor of a southern literary journal. Together they discover a powerful secret that alters their lives.

       “Bright Star is simply fantastic,” said Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. “It is that rarest of rare birds: a genuinely original, new American musical. The music is gorgeous and completely captivating, and the story heartfelt and very sweet.”  

        Principal players are: Brooklyn Williams  (Alice), Lionel Ward (Jimmy Ray,)    Liam Hokama (Billy), Evan Lucas (Mayor), Mila Robertson (Margo)  Chiara  O'Gorman (Mama Murphy), Ben Kerr (Daddy Murphy) Nick Hemmerling  (Daddy Cane) and Annie Siegel (Lucy), Secoya Joaquin (Darryl).All other featured roles and understudies are played by: Ayala Stonewood, Aidan Moriarty, Henry Linsday, Eden Thompson, Tana Tomkins, Sofia Dimaggio Jes Joranco, Gary Plano, Brian Kerns, and Micah Kelson.

 

        Assisting Betsy Bishop, director/producer will be  Jonathan Luke Stevens, choreographer; Brian Kerns, Vocal Director; Karl Iverson, Musical Conductor; Griffin Harwood, Lighting Designer; Kristen Samek, Technical Director and Set Designer; Nathan Ynancy, Costume Designer; Scott Kaiser, Volunteer Voice and Speech; Micah Kelson, Volunteer Acting Coach; Liisa Ivary, North Carolina Dialect Coach, and Hazel James Werfel, Volunteer Dialect Coach.  

 

         Sarah Daley is the stage manager. The assistant stage managers are Keagen Brookes-Torres and Lily Whittle. Sound designer will be Rachel Davis. There will be 20 more students on the tech crew who are all in the AHS Stage Management and Honor Tech Class.

 

         Bright Star will run November 11—13   7:30 p.m. ;November 18-20 @ 7:30 p.m.  with two Sunday matinees, November 14 and 21  at 2 p.m.Tickets are $20. for adults and $15. for students. Tickets can be purchased only at https://ashlandhs.booktix.com
