Subject: Important Update Regarding Lincoln School Dear Ashland School

District Families,

The safety of our students and staff is always our highest priority. On Thursday, August 21, 2025, a fire inspection was conducted at Lincoln School, located at 320 Beach St. Following this inspection, Ashland Fire Marshal Mark Shay and I, in consultation with a structural engineer and architect on-site, determined that the building must be closed immediately to all occupants. The immediate concerns were due to possible lateral movement of a load bearing wall that makes the building unsafe to occupy at this time.

Lincoln School was planned to house Ashland High School’s alternative programs, Thoreau and Catalyst, as well as two specialized programs. While this unexpected closure requires us to relocate these programs, please be assured that new arrangements are already being made. Families of students enrolled in these programs will be contacted directly on Friday, August 22, 2025, with details about their child’s program location.

We are grateful this inspection occurred before the start of the school year, as it allows us to address these concerns now and ensure a safe start for our students. Prior to the inspection, there were no visible signs of structural concerns. The Fire Marshal’s full report is being reviewed, and we will continue to work closely with the Ashland Fire Department and the City of Ashland to ensure all next steps are handled responsibly and transparently.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued partnership as we respond to this unexpected challenge. Together, we will ensure that every student has a safe place to learn and thrive.

With appreciation,

Dr. Joseph Hattrick
Superintendent
