Late Entrance Kindergarten

The Ashland School district enrolls students by age, as required in ORS 339.115(9). For those families interested in retaining their first-grade aged students, where their student is 6 or turns 6 before September 1st, the Ashland School District has developed a process to ensure a successful K-12 school experience.

This process considers a variety of information sources, including family input and input from others who know the child well. A final determination on grade placement is made by the building Principal after considering all of the information provided. You may request a retention by first submitting a written request to the Principal of your child’s neighborhood school.

Late-Age Kindergarten Request Steps:

Step 1: Complete the online enrollment & registration process for 1st grade at: Ashland.k12.or.us/registration (available in late March to early April prior to the school year of enrollment)

Step 2: Complete and provide the following supporting documents to the child’s neighborhood school:

Step 3: Arrange a time with the principal for EasyCBM K-1 Reading & EasyCBM K-1 Math assessments at the school.

Step 4: Submit paperwork to your child’s neighborhood school on or before April 15.

Once the school has received all of the necessary documents and had an opportunity to assess your child, the Principal may convene a Child Study Team (CST) or meet with Kindergarten and first grade teachers to review the request. After all of these steps are completed, the school will notify you of the final determination on grade placement.

Depending on the timing of your application, you may be invited to participate in a Child Study Team Meeting to discuss late-age placement. The CST generally consists of the appropriate teachers, school specialists, parent/guardian and the Principal.

For children turning 6 before June 1, a CST meeting is required to help inform the Principal’s determination. If you child has a spring birthday, please submit your request and required documents in early spring to assure that there is time to convene a CST meeting before the end of the school year prior to the year of enrollment.

We look forward to learning more about your child and welcoming them to the classroom.

Please feel free to contact your child’s neighborhood school if you have further questions.
