District will Modify School Day in Response to May 8
April 23, 2019
Dear Ashland Parents/Guardians:
This letter is to inform you that the Ashland School District (ASD) will be modifying the early release Wednesday schedule to a half-day instructional schedule for students on May 8, 2019.
As many of you are aware, The Oregon Education Association (OEA) has called upon its members to make May 8 a "Day of Action" to advocate for legislative action to significantly invest in K-12 education so that Oregon schools have adequate resources to serve all students. We recognize and are grateful to the Ashland community for their continued and generous support of our schools.
Unions' planned activities include teacher walkouts to protest lack of funding. I have been in ongoing communication with the Ashland Education Association leadership (AEA). AEA let us know that many ASD teachers are planning to participate in an afternoon activity on May 8 to call attention to the need for increased state investment in public education.
Thus, in order to provide safe and adequate supervision for our students on May 8, we will be making a slight modification to student release times by having a half-day bell schedule for May 8, 2019. We will provide student transportation per regular half-day schedule and lunch. In addition, all activities including AP exams and athletics will continue as planned. Please check with your child's school for more details.
While Ashland School District shares the goal of adequate and stable education funding and advocates for providing the resources our students need, the district does not condone walkout strikes or other activities that disrupt learning for students. The district continues to engage with our elected officials to advocate for stable and sufficient funding for K-12 education. We urge staff and others to advocate for what they believe in on their own time and in ways that don't disrupt student support and learning time.
We do appreciate that our teachers' union, Ashland Education Association, has been transparent about their plan, so we have the opportunity to communicate with our families in advance.
I appreciate your support and flexibility as we plan for May 8. We are also grateful for the citizens of Ashland and their continued support of our schools.
