Ashland School District No. 5, Jackson County, Oregon - The Board of Directors met in a work session on September 27, 2004, at 7:00 p.m. in the Ashland High School English Lecture Hall.  Present were:

I.          Call to Order


            The meeting was called to order at 7:07 p.m. by Chair Amrhein.


II.         Roll Check


            A roll of the board was taken and all members were present.


III.            Ashland Quality Education Model for Ashland High School


            Juli Di Chiro gave a PowerPoint presentation on the draft of Ashland’s Quality Education Model for the Ashland High School and responded to questions. 


Below is public input that was gathered from the community members present.


High School Prototype:

Establish counselor ratio by thinking about the minimum number of student/counselor meetings each year.

8 period block day – high priority.  Provide comprehensive course offerings – more flexibility for student choice – increased instructional time.

Technology – increase student access.

“School within a school” small learning community – no consensus to pursue this model.

Expansion of existing alternatives.



      Ashland High School needs Commons/Multipurpose Room.

Gym Traffic / Parking Issues





Shops – Updfate

Scene Shop

Conservation / Energy Issues


Music Room


Other Ideas / Concerns:      

Music program improvement.

Time / project management training for students.

Study skills curriculum

Community service / service learning (100 hours – graduation requirement)

Study WCS to determine why it is appealing to students

School to work

Video / TV production

Summer school and enrichment programs


Board members will discuss this issue at the April 12 regular meeting.
