Experiential Learning Fee for 6th Grade

In 6th grade at AMS, we value opportunities to give students experiences outside of the classroom. Some of the cost of these field experiences are covered by the Ashland Youth Activities and Academics Levy. A significant portion of the sixth grade science curriculum at AMS includes resident outdoor school experience where students learn about ecology and the environment while on a three-day, two-night adventure. Additionally, we change up our schedule each year for three days so that students can participate in “Core Intensives”, a chance to spend a day with each core teacher diving into a concept in depth or going on a field trip to explore. We schedule time for team building so that the 6th grade class can bond as a cohesive unit as we blend the different elementary schools together. In addition, we purchase consumable supplies so that students can experiment and investigate in our science labs.

Field trips planned for the 2017-2018 school year include:

  • Three-days and two-nights of ROS (Residential Outdoor School) –
  • includes food, lodging and instruction.
  • Waves Investigations at ScienceWorks.
  • Two team building “fun” field trips.

We are requesting that each family contribute $100 towards the cost of consumable supplies and these programs (the cost of ROS alone is $88 per student). While we do not usually collect money at any other time in the school year for field trips, we realize that paying the full amount at the beginning of the school year might be a burden for some families, so we offer a payment option. It is our policy that no student will be left behind because of financial need, so scholarships are available. In addition, payments can be made throughout the school year if back-to-school costs in August exceed your family’s budget. If you are willing and able, we would welcome donations to help offset the cost of scholarships.
