Ashland School District No. 5, Jackson County Oregon Ė The Food Services Advisory Committee met in a work session on Monday, January 4, 2010.  Present were:

I.          Call to Order

 

            The meeting was called to order at 3:35 by Ruth Alexander, chair.

 

II.         Roll Check

 

            All members were present.

           

III.       Reports

           

            Mary:  Food Services of America is part of a statewide Farm 2 School network of vendors

                        Information about Applegate Food Co-op

            Jill T Ė storage and distribution for frozen foods

            Eva - surveys, data collecting

 

IV.       Eva reported on the preliminary survey results:

 

            510 middle schoolers turned in answers

            138 out of 508 or 28% ate in the cafeteria a few times or not at all.

            Reasons for not eating: 

                        1.  Taste of food

                        2.  Quality of  food

                        3.  Not nutritional enough

                        4.  Not fresh

                        5.  Cost

                        6.  Dietary restraints (personal)

                        7.  Friends donít eat there

            13% never eat there and never will eat there

            22% sometimes eat there

 

            The respondents said they would like more variety; different options in rotation; better quality

            Fresher food.

 

V.        Studied the report from Jill on Food Services that compare to Ashland in Size and Free and Reduced population. 

 

            Ashland had highest deficit of all at the end of year.

            Gladstone, a district more similar to ours than any of the others in size and free and reduced, had     a carry over.  Ruth will speak to Gladstone district. 

 

VI.       Discussion of high school food services.  Nearby schools close in size to AHS:  Klamath Union,

            Eagle Point, Mazama

 

            Question about using EAís in cafeterias:  Jill said thatís up to the principalís discretion.        

 

            Question about how much we pay Sodexo:  We pay $1.98 per meal served.

 

V.        Adjournment

 

            The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 pm by Ruth Alexander.

            The next meeting will be held on Monday, January 11, 2010 at Bellview School.
