Ashland School District No. 5, Jackson County, Oregon - The Food Services Advisory Committee met in a work session Monday, September 28, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. in the Bellview School Conference Room.    Present were:

I.          Call to Order

 

            The meeting was called to order at 3:30 p.m. by Eva Skuratowicz.  All members and interested parties introduced themselves.

 

II.        Roll Check

                                                                                                                

            All members were present with the exception of Ruth Alexander and Tracy Harding.

 

III.       Appoint a Chairperson and Secretary

 

Ruth Alexander was appointed as Chair and the Secretary duties will rotate between Shannon Wolff and Eva Skuratowicz.   (Note -Minutes need to be forwarded to Jill for inclusion in the board packet by the first Tuesday of each month).

 

IV.       Review the Board Charge and Public Meeting Rules

 

Both documents were E mailed to members and community members prior to the meeting. Six members of the 11 constitute a quorum. 

 

Charge to the Committee:

 

The Food Services Study Committee will be charged with studying the potential models for food services in the Ashland School District.  The models will be evaluated using the following criteria:

 

1.  Highest quality food services for students with an emphasis on fresh, healthy, and nutritious foods.

2.  Maximize the use of local food products.

3.  Effective and responsive staffing model.

4.  Revenue neutral to the District:  the revenue generated from state and federal reimbursement, combined with food sales will cover the total costs of the food service program.

5.  Effective methods for increasing student participation in the breakfast and lunch program.

 

V.        Overview of Current Food Service System

 

Discussion on an overview of our current food service system was led by Jill Turner:   Jill reviewed the current program.  Currently, the District contracts with Sodexo for the overall management of the Food Service program, food procurement, as well as the operations at the high school. Statistics on the number of meals served, percentile of free and reduce children and current cost were sent to members by Email.  It was decided to contact the Oregon Department of Education to have a free overall review of our Food Service Program.

 

VI.       Research and Study Subgroups

 

            The committee came to the conclusion they wanted more information about alternative models prior to choosing a sub-committee.  Ruth, Jill and Eva were asked to provide more definition around this subject and Email the info to the committee.  Members will then choose a committee prior to the next full meeting.

 

VII.     Schedule Next Meeting

 

The next meeting will be held on October 19 at 3:30 p.m. in the Bellview Conference Room.  The following additional meetings were scheduled:  November 2, November 16, November 30, December 14.

 

VIII.    Adjournment

             

              There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:01 p.m.
